Uses of Wing Nut

Wing nuts have a body with two wings on opposite sides. These wing nuts are large enough to be easily tightened by hand. The nut itself generally curves out of the component that is held in place by the wing nut. The hole with the thread is made through the center of the wing nut. These fasteners are generally used to hold component covers that are frequently removed by operators. Wing nuts can only be used in applications where torque on the fasteners is not a priority. Wing nuts themselves can only be tightened by hand. The advantage of using wing nuts is that no tools are needed to remove them. A clean thread is important when wing nuts are used.
