What is Surfactants

Surfactants are molecules that are amphiphilic (having both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties). Hydrophilic is a type of compound that can bind water, while lipophilic is a compound that can bind oil and hates water (hydrophobic). Surfactants can be found in soaps, detergents and cleaning solutions. Surfactants are molecules that can be absorbed at the liquid-gas interface. When put into water, Surfactants will align themselves with their hydrophobic part in the air, while their hydrophilic part is in the water so as to reduce the tension at the surface or interface of the substance.

Types of Surfactants

Surfactants are compounds that bind water, the types of surfactants themselves vary based on the difference in charge on their hydrophilic heads. To make it easier for you to know the types of Surfactants, here is the discussion:

1. Anionic Surfactants

Anionic surfactants are surfactants whose molecular ends are negatively charged which are hydrophilic. This negatively charged part of the molecule is usually a sulfonate, sulfate, or carboxylate.

Examples of anionic surfactants are sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate, sodium stearate, and potassium alcohol sulfate which are commonly found in soaps and detergents.

2. Nonionic Surfactants

Nonionic surfactants are a type of surfactants that do not have ions. These surfactants acquire their polarity because the molecule at one end has an oxygen-rich portion and at the other end has a large organic molecule.

Examples of nonionic surfactants used are ethoxylate alcohols, nonylphenoxy polyethylene alcohols, and ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymers. Nonionic surfactants are generally non-foaming or low-foaming, making them suitable for use as an ingredient in the manufacture of low-foaming detergents.

3. Cationic Surfactants

Cationic surfactants are positively charged molecules derived from nitrogen compounds. Generally, cationic surfactants have sanitary or cleaning properties, such as bactericidal or other. This type of surfactants is useful for making disinfectants that leave a layer of cationic disinfectant on the surface. An example of cationic surfactants is alkyl ammonium chloride.

4. Amphoteric Surfactants

Amphoteric surfactants are a type of surfactants whose charge changes with pH. These surfactants can be anionic, nonionic, or cationic, depending on the pH.

Amphoteric surfactants are often used in personal care products, such as shampoos and cosmetics. Examples of commonly used amphoteric surfactants are betaine and amino oxides.
